Gray trained as a journalist in his native Scotland, working as a newspaper reporter before adding design and photography to his repertoire. His work has taken him to London, Hong Kong, Bangkok and New York City, where he now lives and works as creative director and visual creative on magazines and brands. Along the way, he has garnered awards in design, writing and photography, and is a published author as well as a pioneer of the high-end print renaissance. Recent and ongoing photography projects include documenting the high-altitude thrills of Pikes Peak Hill Climb in Colorado, the sound and fury of Sebring's famed endurance race and Photographer in Residence at Brooklyn's esteemed public library. The first monograph of Gray's NYC images came out in late 2024.
